On Thursday the year 1 kids were lucky enough to go on an excursion down to the Woolongong Science Centre and Planetarium. It was a great day and we all really had a lot of fun learning about all things science. We had to catch a couple of buses down to Woolongong, which took about an hour and a half. When we got there we quickly had some recess before going into the centre to explore.
We were split into two big groups with the year 2 kids going to one section of the centre while year 1 went into the planetarium to watch a short film about the Solar System. The film was about a family of bugs who were looking for a cool planet to go to for a holiday. They flew all around the Solar System in a bug spaceship, exploring the planets and learning all about things like their distance from the sun, their atmospheres and environments before deciding that Planet Earth was 'The Perfect Little Planet' to go and visit.

After watching the film, we went into a section of the Science Centre where they have a whole bunch of hands on displays where kids and adults alike can interact and learn about physics. They have an 'endurance tester' on which kids can hang from a bar to test their strength. They also have a net into which you can throw a ball to see how fast your throw is. Mr. Hewes is a massively #l33t tough guy and was able to throw at 70kph. Another installation that Mr. Hewes and some of the boys from K/1L particularly enjoyed was using the robot arm to pick up blocks. It was really quite tricky and tested your ability to use information about position to direct the arm. The animatronic dinosaur enclosure was also really cool. What a great day of learning!
