This term for our #50WC we've been learning about persuasive writing. For our first week, students wrote posts about why we should care for nature. Last week, Mr. Hewes gave us a task that was a little tricky, so we decided to ditch his idea and write about something that we're interested in order to convince the readers that they should be interested in that stuff, too. Some of us chose to write about TV shows like The Winx and Pepa Pig, others wrote about ice skating and their baby brothers. Quite a few of us decided to write about Minecraft.
This was kinda cool because it just so happened that one of the teachers, Mr. Johnson brought in a Minecraft Proxy application to school which Mr. Hewes was able to get up and running on the computers that we use. In order to get access to Minecraft, we had to use our persuasive writing skills to try to convince people that Minecraft truly is cool. To do so, we had to provide a statement about how cool Minecraft is, and then support that with 3 reasons why. You can see some of our posts at our #BodaciousBloggers kidblog site here.
Another cool thing happened last week. Kate Booth, a teacher who is also interested in Minecraft and does cool stuff in virtual worlds with her classes, picked up on what we were doing in K/1MEPS and decided to join in with a class from Coffs Harbour Public School. The year 1 Coffs Harbour kids left some beautiful comments on Asma's blog post about Minecraft.
After we'd all finished writing about Minecraft using our XOs we jumped into the K/1L Minecraft world and began building our houses. It's a really exciting project and we can't wait to get back to building, writing and learning about literacy as we continue to do cool stuff in class!
