We have been learning a lot about measuring length lately. Firstly we tried measuring the length of different places in the playground using our own steps. We soon realised that this was an unreliable form of measurement as the things we measured differed in length depending on who was taking the steps. We discussed how we could make our measurements more reliable and decided that whatever we used to take our measurements had to be the same in order for us to take reliable measurements.
We tried using unifix cubes to measure things around the classroom and discovered that we would all come back with the same results because all unifix cubes are the same size! We then learned about metres and centimetres, using the metre rule to take measurements of various things in and around the heritage building.
The final thing we did was to take the trundle wheels outside and measure some of the things that we had measured before using our own steps. We chose to measure the length of the lines crossing the netball court. We discovered that everybody came back with the same answer. The lines were all 15 metres long!
Below you can see some of the difference in trundle wheel styles that some of the students in K1MEPS have.
